It’s just one of those things that are indescribable. I can’t believe how loud and insane the whole city was in those few hours. If you can’t feel the concussions in your chest, you are not experiencing it enough. The highlight of the night was the now infamous, “white box”. Some good-willed strangers just came, lit the box, and left. What followed was pure magic and joy. If you haven’t seen the video of the white box yet, I posted it below. I can’t wait for my second experience in a couple of weeks. It’ll be a nice farewell gift from China.

For the past few weeks, there have been talks of what happens in China during their new year (according to the lunar calendar). Words like “crazy”, “world war III”, “loud”, and “unbelievable” were constantly used to describe it, but more importantly, they said it was just indescribable. Okay. I was ready. All this hype. Will it live up to it? The answer was yes. Not only yes, but it went above and beyond the hype, which is quite remarkable as many things in life do not live up to the hype that surrounds it. This, however, was truly a once in a lifetime experience that everyone should have. I mean, all the words I mentioned before were coming out of my mouth; it seriously was World War III. Explosions of all colors, shapes and sizes were going off right above my head. I couldn’t even hold a conversation because the whole city was exploding. In America, this is only a dream a boy could have. Where we were was not even a special place to be. It was just in our neighborhood. What did that tell me? This was going on all over the city, and it was evident as the night sky seemed to pulsate with the reflections of explosions. I can’t really explain it. It’s just one of those things where you have to experience it for yourself to get what I’m talking about. All fireworks aside, I saw a side of community where everyone came together for the collective good to blow things up.

It’s so funny. I realized for 24 years, I have lived in ignorance. Little did I know that something like this was going on every year all the way around the world. I blame all my Chinese friends for this. The video below captured the peak of the night, when a few good strangers quietly slipped in and set this wonderful gift off to our community. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this good stranger, but xiexie.

Tony excited to buy fireworks.

And so it began…

Took this after everything quieted down. Wish I could’ve taken this during the chaos, but you can still see some fireworks going off in the distance. It’s been D plus 2 days here and explosions are still going off… Love it.
